Herel Hughes is an Irish-American photo and video journalist based between Asia and Latin America. Her work explores the impact of geopolitical decisions on civilians which has taken her to the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the mountains of Peru, and the small fishing communities of Taiwan.
Her work can be found in publications such as Al Jazeera, CNN, TaiwanPlus, Tokyothèque, and TimeOut Magazine.
Herel’s previous experience in humanitarian aid and time volunteering with the Peace Corps heavily influence her work. She has an MA in War & Conflict Journalism as well as certificates in Hostile Environment and First Aid (HEFAT), Ethical Storytelling, Crisis Reporting, and Covering Riots and Civil Unrest.
Herel has travelled across six continents, lived in nine countries, and speaks four languages. She is currently searching out stories focused on gender, human rights, sustainable development, and conflict.
